What is Network Marketing or Multi Level Marketing (MLM)?

Multilevel Marketing is one of the fastest growing yet most misunderstood methods of moving products in use today. It has been termed by many as the Wave-of-the Eighties.

By the 90's more than 100 billion dollars worth of products and services has been moved through Multilevel Marketing companies.

What is MLM?

1. Marketing simply means moving a product or service from the manufacturer or provider to the consumer.

2. Multilevel refers to the system of compensation provided to the persons who are causing the product to move or the service to be provided. "Multi" means more than one. "Level" means generation.

There are five basic methods of moving products:

1. Retailing. Example. The grocery store, the hardware store, You go into a store and purchase something.

2. Direct Sales. Example. Tupperware, Avon.

3. Network Marketing or Multi level Marketing(MLM). This should not be confused with retailing which commonly is. Example. Herbalife

4. Mail Order. This can be an MLM but mostly is included in the Direct Sales category.

5. Pyramid Sales. This type of Sales is to often confuse with MLM. The fact is, Pyramids are illegal. The main reason they may be illegal is their failure to move a product or to provide a valid service. If a product doesn't move, how can you even call it "marketing", let alone "Multi level Marketing". Multi level it may be, but Marketing they are not!

Most objections that people have about getting into Multi level Marketing are due to not realizing the difference between MLM, Pyramid Sales and the Direct Sales methods of marketing.

Reputable MLM companies belong to the Direct Selling Association (DSA).

We have been conditioned to think of MLM as door to door direct sales programs because our first encounter with them was when a distributor knocked on our door to sell us something.

There are some features that differentiate MLM from Retail companies and one very significant difference are that in MLM you are in business for YOURSELF but NOT BY YOURSELF.

Being in business for yourself means you are buying the products WHOLESALE from the company you are representing.

Since we are buying products WHOLESALE we can, if we wish, sell these products at RETAIL and make a PROFIT.

The most common misunderstanding about MLM is the notion that you HAVE TO sell retail to be successful.

Let your sales come as the natural result of building the organization. The real success is in building the organization.

The word "selling" triggers negative thoughts in the minds of about 95 % of the people. In MLM you don't need to "sell" the products in the traditional sense of the word.

However, the PRODUCTS MUST MOVE or NOBODY GETS PAID.

When you build an organization, you are actually building a network through which to channel your products or services.

Retailing is the foundation of Network Marketing. Network Marketing or MLM is building an organization in which a lot of distributors all retail the products.

Another point that differentiates MLM, is the SPONSORING of other distributors. This is called RECRUITING.

When you SPONSOR someone, you are making a COMMITMENT to TEACH them how to do what you are doing, building a BUSINESS OF THEIR OWN. Sponsoring is what makes a Multi level Marketing business so different and makes it grow.

As your organization grows, you are building toward becoming an INDEPENDENT SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS PERSON. You are your OWN BOSS.

In almost all of the MLM Programs you can move to another area of the country and sponsor people without losing the volume generated by the group you left behind.

In MLM Programs you can make a lot of money by building an organization as one of the functions.

A Multi level Marketing Organization or Network Marketing is not a pyramid scheme.

In the MLM Marketing everybody starts at the bottom and has the opportunity to build a large organization, even larger than his sponsor's organization if desired.

Herbalife's Founder

In Tribute to Herbalife's Founder: Mark Hughes 1956-2000

"You can't stop a good idea from taking hold and spreading."

The extraordinary vision and commitment that inspired Mark Hughes to found Herbalife began when he was just a teenager. Due to the tragic loss of his mother to unsafe dieting practices, Mark made a promise to find a way to help people lose weight safely.

Mark was impassioned by the time-honored practice of using herbs for improving health and formed a team of medical and nutritional experts to create Herbalife's breakthrough products. In 1980, Mark launched Herbalife by working as the first Distributor selling the nutritional products.

"The products are what get you an emotional experience. It's the glow in their eye; it's the way that they feel; it's the excitement and the way that they act."

As more and more people tried the products and experienced positive results, the business quickly expanded. Mark developed a network of Distributors who shared his vision, were passionate about the products and excited about the business opportunity. Mark encouraged Herbalife Distributors to "have faith in the organization, to know that it's going to work."

"Through your efforts, people are discovering new worlds of opportunity and an eternal hope for the future."

Speak with people who met Mark and they will tell you how he motivated them to commit themselves to reach greater heights personally and professionally. He inspired people from all walks of life through his faith in people's ability to change lives, starting with their own. Mark believed that one person can truly make a difference and that difference is a healthier world.

"I am convinced the future will be brilliant beyond compare."

Mark passed away in 2000, but his vision for changing people's lives - helping people manage their weight, regain their health and find financial prosperity - continues to thrive. Today, there are more than 1.9 million Herbalife Distributors in over 70 countries, making their dreams of a healthier life and financial independence come true.

"Introducing balanced nutrition to millions of people in the world is a dream come true for me."

In honor of Mark's pioneering work in weight management and nutrition, Herbalife helped establish the Mark Hughes Cellular and Molecular Nutrition Laboratory at UCLA in 2003, dedicated to science-based nutrition research.

Herbalife

In February 1980, Mark Hughes began selling the original Herbalife weight loss product from the trunk of his car. Hughes passion for the products and program stemmed from the weight loss concerns of his mother, whose death he attributed to an eating disorder and an unhealthy approach to weight loss. The company's slogan -- "Lose weight now. Ask me how?" became a burgeoning call sign for its distributors, who often wore buttons or otherwise adorned their vehicles with the slogan, or posted signs and distributed flyers with the slogan, and a distributor's telephone number. Adopting the Network Marketing/Multi Level Marketing(MLM) system for distribution and growth, the company attracted thousands of would-be entrepreneurs who sold its products on a door-to-door or word-of-mouth campaign.
By 1982, Herbalife had reached $2,000,000 in sales and opened a distributorship in Canada, its first outside of the United States. In 1986 Herbalife became a publicly traded company via NASDAQ. In 1994 Mark Hughes started the Herbalife Family Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping children around the world. The organization receives donations from Herbalife itself as well as individuals within and outside the company. The Herbalife Family Foundation has donated more than $6.5 million to children's causes worldwide. In 1996 Herbalife reached $1,000,000,000 in annual sales.

In 2002, Whitney and Co. LLC and Golden Gate Capital acquired Herbalife for $685 million and took the company private.

In April 2003, Michael O. Johnson joined Herbalife as CEO following a 17-year career with The Walt Disney Company, most recently as president of Walt Disney International. On December 16, 2004, the company had an initial public offering on the NYSE of 14,500,000 common shares at $14/share. 2004 net sales were reported as $1.3 billion. In April 2005, the company celebrated its 25th anniversary with a four-day event attended by 35,000 Herbalife Independent Distributors from around the world.
